Ocean Integrity’s MPED: A Breakthrough in Microplastic Elimination

By Frederick Christopher – Development Advisor, Ocean Integrity

The Hidden Threat: Microplastics

Plastic bottles and bags are visible reminders of pollution, but the most dangerous plastics are the ones we cannot see: microplastics. These particles, often smaller than a grain of sand, infiltrate marine ecosystems, accumulate in fish and coral, and ultimately make their way into the human food chain.

Current cleanup technologies can skim larger debris from the ocean surface, but until now, no scalable, energy-efficient solution has existed for capturing microplastics at the source.

That’s where Ocean Integrity’s MPED (Micro-plastics Elimination Device™) comes in.

Invented by a Visionary

The MPED was designed, invented, and patented by Captain Kieran Kelly, founder of Ocean Integrity and Templeton. With a lifelong dedication to ocean conservation and innovation, Captain Kelly created MPED as a groundbreaking solution to one of the planet’s most invisible and urgent threats.

What Is MPED?

The Ocean Integrity MPED is a patent-pending filtration system designed specifically to remove microplastics as small as 65 microns from rivers, coastal zones, and ocean waters.

Unlike traditional cleanup systems that rely on fuel-hungry vessels or mechanical skimmers, MPED is passive and static. It works like a precision filtration net, capturing plastics as water naturally flows through it, no engines, no propellers, no carbon-heavy operations.
• Low energy design: Requires power only during installation and maintenance.
• Negligible carbon footprint: No tugboats, no heavy fuel consumption.
• Scalable: Can be deployed in rivers, estuaries, and coastal areas worldwide.

How It Works
• Fixed Net Design: Developed in collaboration with a net company in Denmark, MPED is deployed as a line net system, some installations are up to 120 meters long and 20 meters deep.
• Passive Filtration: Relies on natural water flow to carry microplastics into the net.
• Capture Efficiency: Filters out particles invisible to the naked eye, down to 65 microns.
• Recycling & Repurposing: Collected plastics, often low-grade and contaminated, are processed into 100% recycled products such as bricks for local housing construction.

A Holistic Solution: Technology + Social Impact

MPED is more than just a device. It’s a system of transparency and empowerment.
• Blockchain Integration: Every kilogram of plastic collected is logged, geo-tagged, and uploaded onto the blockchain, ensuring transparency and accountability.
• Fair Compensation: Indigenous fishermen operating MPED systems are fairly paid for their work, creating new income streams for families in vulnerable coastal regions.
• Community Building: Recycled plastic is repurposed into useful local products, such as housing materials, creating a direct social benefit beyond cleanup.

This combination of technology, sustainability, and community empowerment makes MPED one of the most forward-thinking ocean cleanup innovations today.

Why MPED Matters
• Marine Life Protection: Prevents microplastics from suffocating coral reefs and poisoning fish stocks.
• Human Health: Reduces the invisible plastics entering our food and water supply.
• Global Scalability: Flexible design allows deployment in rivers, ports, and coastal currents where plastic enters the ocean.
• Low Environmental Cost: Its passive design ensures minimal disruption to ecosystems and near-zero operational emissions.

Looking Ahead

Ocean Integrity’s MPED is proof that impactful solutions don’t need massive machinery or complex infrastructure. By combining simple physics with advanced materials, blockchain transparency, and community engagement, MPED represents a new model of ocean cleanup: scalable, energy-efficient, and socially inclusive.

With each deployment, Ocean Integrity moves closer to its mission: a world where rivers and oceans are free from the invisible plague of microplastics.

Join the Movement

At Ocean Integrity, we believe that technology alone isn’t enough. True impact comes from partnerships, community, and collective action.

By supporting MPED, you are:
🌊 Stopping microplastics before they reach the ocean.
🌊 Supporting local fishermen and vulnerable communities.
🌊 Driving transparency and accountability in ocean cleanup.
🌊 Helping transform waste into resources that build better futures.

Together, we can eliminate microplastics and restore the health of our oceans.

🌍 Ocean Integrity – Innovation. Transparency. Impact.

The Inventor’s Story: Captain Kieran Kelly

The MPED (Micro-plastics Elimination Device™) is the brainchild of Captain Kieran Kelly, the founder of Ocean Integrity and Templeton.

For more than two decades, Captain Kelly has dedicated his life to protecting our oceans. Witnessing first-hand the destruction caused by plastic pollution and climate change, he resolved to create scalable, science-driven solutions that would make a real, measurable impact.

The MPED is the result of years of research, innovation, and collaboration, designed to capture microplastics down to 65 microns while maintaining low energy use and minimal environmental footprint.

This is more than just an invention; it’s part of Captain Kelly’s mission to restore marine ecosystems, empower coastal communities, and bring accountability through blockchain-powered transparency.

Captain Kelly continues to push the boundaries of innovation with Ocean Integrity projects such as the Aquatherm Disruptor™ and the Clean the Ocean with Every Transaction movement, showing the world that real change requires courage, creativity, and integrity.
